Overview
The 1986 World Exposition on Transportation and Communication, or popularly known as Expo 86, was a specialized expo held in Vancouver from May 2, 1986 to October 13, 1986, on an area of 70 hectares. The theme of the expo was "Transportation and Communication: World in Motion - World in Touch". Some forms of transportation in the expo include cable cars, maglev train (Japan Pavilion), monorail, people mover (France Pavilion), ferries, and the Advanced Light Rapid Transit (SkyTrain).
The fair was held in the north shore of False Creek and Canada Place, with the latter connected to the main fair grounds around False Creek by the SkyTrain, through the third platform of Stadium Station (now Stadium-Chinatown) and Waterfront Station.
Some notable landmarks and attractions of Vancouver today, including Canada Place and Science World, were built for the expo, as well as other infrastructure projects around British Columbia completed to coincide with the expo, such as the Coquihalla Highway.
The expo was also credited by many to be Vancouver's coming of age, transforming Vancouver from a sleepy town to an international metropolis, although leaving a complicated legacy in the Downtown Eastside neighborhood that persists to the present[1][2].
