Australian Mapping Community/Past Events/Macleay Island Mapping Party November 2009
This will be a friendly meetup of openstreetmappers in Brisbane, hopefully with a few interested newbies thrown into the mix.
When: Saturday 21st November 2009
Where: Macleay Island, Queensland
The Plan
Please feel free to call David on 0407 151 912 on the day if you can't find us.
11:20 Meet at Weinam Creek Marina, Banana Street, Redland Bay
11:30 - 11:48 Catch the passenger ferry to Macleay Island (timetable)
12:00 - 14:00 Lunch at the Blue Parrot Cafe (Booked under OpenStreetMap)
14:00 - 17:00 Map your chosen area
17:18 - 17:36 Catch the passenger ferry back to Redland Bay
If you are taking a car you'll need to catch a car ferry from Stradbroke Ferries (timetable) and the ferry times will be different to the passenger ferries.
Transportation
As Macleay Island is -- surprisingly enough -- an actual island, there are associated costs for transportation.
Ferry Ticket: Return
Adult | Concession | Child | Student | Vehicle |
---|---|---|---|---|
$14.60 | $7.30 | $7.30 | $7.30 | $99.00 (with on-line booking) |
These prices are (except for cars) from Bay Islands Transit. Ferries leave from the Weinam Creek Marina on Banana Street, Redland Bay.
The Map
Please help us map Macleay Island. You can add anything that you think is important, but some of the types of things that other mappers like to collect are:
- missing streets (paved and unpaved)
- street names
- missing street facilities (traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, speed bumps, etc.)
- missing streets and paths
- missing parks/schools/etc
- missing amenities (water fountains, toilets, playgrounds, seats, shelters, etc.)
- shops/restaurants/pubs
However, if you aren't sure what to do, please let me know, and I'll be glad to get you started.
If you want a printable map suitable for making notes on, one will be made available from Walking Papers once their mapping catches up with the current state of the island.
Who's coming?
Anybody is welcome. Please RSVP to David Dean using the contact details below, or just add your name here if you have the technology. Put a cake section label next to your name if you want to claim it:

Quick add this to your Google Calendar with the following:

Cake Slices
As there's four of us coming (as of the 18th,) and eight slices, it might be worthwhile reserving an extra slice for if you finish early, or feel up for it or whatever.
The only reason I bring this up prior to the day is because I'm planning to take a bike and may be able to cover more ground, and my phone will only let me pre-download a limited number of tiles (Macleay Island is outside of Three coverage.) So if anyone has any objections or wants to wrestle for cake, add a point here, or take it to #osm-au
