DEI
The Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Team for OpenStreetMap is a community initiative that encourages, supports, and enables DEI in the OpenStreetMap community.
Inclusion is not about just being respectful to each other; it is also to make the community accessible to groups from under-represented, disabled, and many other communities.
While the DEI Team is open to contributions from everyone, our community stands strong on pillars of mutual respect, tolerance, and encouragement. Please review the DEI Team's Code of Conduct for more information.
Vision
The DEI Team community empowers contributors from diverse backgrounds to speak up, participate, and lead. The DEI Team supports the OpenStreetMap contributors in making inclusive spaces, both as active contributors including others or as new contributors making their start in the OpenStreetMap community.
Mission
The DEI Team empowers OpenStreetMap contributors by organizing events that improve inclusion inside OpenStreetMap areas and partnering with other OpenStreetMap community initiatives that strive to improve inclusion or provide inclusive spaces. The DEI Team further acts as a bridge between the larger OpenStreetMap community and DEI members.
What we do
You can track our ongoing or planned projects over on the DEI Team Fediverse account for now, but we may change this in the future to consolidate our projects and tasks in a better way.
Where to find the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Team for OpenStreetMap
The DEI Team uses the following communication platforms:
Asynchronous
Synchronous
The Discourse forum is best for asynchronous communication. This means it is best for questions or topics that someone may respond to later. It is better for longer, threaded discussions.
The Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Team Matrix room is best for synchronous communication. This means it is best for quick feedback, like a conversation. It is helpful for real-time discussions or getting someone’s attention more quickly.
Meetings
We have not planned any meeting sessions yet! Ideally we would want one text and one voice to be as inclusive we can for those who can't attend one type but can attend the other.
Get involved
- Are you willing to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in the OpenStreetMap community?
- Are you part of a local chapter, events, or OpenStreetMap Foundation?
- Are you involved with projects related to OpenStreetMap?
If you said YES to one or more points above, you are at the right place! Our team always looks forward to working with folks from diverse backgrounds. We believe everyone can bring value to our goal in one way or the other.
