About State of the Map US
State of the Map US is the biggest and best gathering of OpenStreetMap US community members from across the country! Why not have it in your backyard? We have had some incredible State of the Map US conferences over the years, and in total hosted more than 4,000 people in 11 locations.
State of the Map US 2023
We are now welcoming your ideas of where to hold the next State of the Map US conference. Past conferences have been held in the following locations: 2010 Atlanta, 2012 Portland, Oregon, 2013 San Francisco, 2014 Washington, D.C., 2015 New York City, 2016 Seattle, 2017 Boulder, Colorado, 2018 Detroit, 2019 Minneapolis, 2020 (postponed) and for the first time we were in the SW in 2022 Tucson, Arizona.
Where will 2023 bring us? It would be great to visit a new part of the country! It could be a place where there is already a strong OSM community or a region where we'd like to grow the map. OSM US will be open to suggestions and applications to host, and a decision will be made by the OpenStreetMap US team and board based on a number of factors, including accessibility, local representation, travel costs, event budget, and past conferences. Now that we have staff on our team, there is less pressure for the local team to take on a lot of the planning work so don't be shy!

Apply to Host
Bids for the 2023 conference closed on August 15, 2022. If you are interested in helping to host SOTM US 2024, please submit the information below to signify your bid. This should be a general plan with the proposed venue, budget, and ideas for social activities, outlined below. We’re interested in hearing from groups of people who are excited to work with the OpenStreetMap US staff, board, and volunteer program committee to build a successful event. All ideas are welcome! Please include, though not limited to, the following information on the page below:
- Local Team: Names of principal organizers and any affiliations.
- Partners: Names of institutions, organizations, companies, communities, or otherwise that you foresee sponsoring and/or technically supporting the conference. We’re interested in local groups that might help make this event especially successful.
- Dates: Suggested date ranges for the conference.
- Venue: A venue option & estimated cost. We'll need a location that can accommodate 300-500 participants and 10 exhibitors. The space should include room for at least two parallel sessions, some breakout rooms, and lunch.
- Logistics: What are the options in terms of transportation & accessibility?
- Lodging: Indicate nearby affordable lodging for attendees. Keep in mind that State of the Map US attendees tend to be from out of town and don’t want to drive or walk very far each morning. Are there dorms? Hostels? Hotels? Airbnbs?
- Budget: Please provide a general sense of travel and lodging costs.
- Your Town: Because it’s not just about mapping, please provide suggestions for local tourist attractions & social activities near the proposed venue site. What should we see in your town?
We hope you will consider sharing your idea for State of the Map US 2023! Know that you are not alone and that the OSM US staff, a program committee, and the board will help with leading program decisions, day-of logistics, accounting, ticketing, t-shirts, design, and more.
