Proposal
This would enable us to map land used for community food growing projects.
Rationale
We currently have these two related tags:
- landuse=farmland - land used for commercial crop cultivation and livestock rearing
- landuse=allotments - land divided into private plots for individuals to grow their own food
But we have no means of tagging land used by communities to grow food collectively in a non-profit way. There is a growing interest in community food growing projects around the world, as evidenced by the following just from London:
- Capital Growth (supported by the Mayor)
- Growing Southwark
- Sutton Community Farm
- Ruskin Park community garden
- Transition Town Brixton growing projects

Why not another subtag?
I am sure lots of people will suggest a subtag of farmland/allotments, something like community=yes or access=community. But these spaces are neither farms nor allotments, so it would be misleading to qualify farmland/allotment with a subtag.
Tagging
I would propose:
It could equally be something close like landuse=communal_food_growing. Or there may be a similar wording that more easily includes livestock, as some community food spaces have goats, pigs, etc. I'm open to suggestions!
Rendering
Except for in specialist maps, I would suggest these are rendered in the same way as allotments.

Hi, this is a nice idea, but why not a own tag that can be assigned to other landuse=*? For example shared_land=yes;no? To me a own landuse type seems to be a bit 'luxurious' ;) --!i!

What about setting a subtag for gardens? There is already a broad variety of suggested subtags for gardens and I have tagged these in the past as gardens. -- Dieterdreist 11:15, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
- I had a look at Proposed_features/Garden_specification, which looks great, but doesn't really match this use of land any more than it could be qualified by a subtag to cover allotments. TomChance 11:29, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
I think this makes a lot of sense and has my support. There are lots of community food growing projects popping up in the UK and not a great way to tag them, as they aren't private allotments. Re garden tags - don't really think that it is descriptive enough - as this is about food growing. So I also agree they should be rendered as allotments. SamSmith 10:02, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
I just came across a community garden and your proposal seems to fit, so I have followed it (148115070 148115070). I think dropping the "growing" from the value would leave a more generic but still acceptable tag? And agree about landuse seeming the right fit. One additional wrinkle I came across is the ownership/operation/naming problem that is a general problem, given this seems quite likely to come up for community gardens the proposal might give it a few words? I see no other way to tag community gardens and this proposal makes sense. They are reasonably common around where I live. Have used at least once and would like to progress its assimilation. I would entertain a discussion about the value being different, something like "community_garden" or "community_food" as suggested above. Hubne (talk) 08:15, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
- Have combined this tag with others both successfully and without harm (I believe). There's this combination I think makes sense maybe even instead of community_food_growing:
- * leisure=garden
- * operator=community (I think this key/value could be successfully applied in a number of community-operated objects that we map)
- … then to indicate the purpose of the garden, it gets creative but I might turn this into a proposal:

- I was looking for the right tag(s) to map the community farm near me and nothing quite fit (442720540 442720540). It's not leisure=garden because the purpose is food production and job creation. It's not landuse=farmland because it is not commercial and it is not landuse=allotments because it is a collective enterprise. Looking at the websites listed in this proposal, this seems the best fit for York Community Farm. David Colby-Hutchison 08:26, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
