Proposal
De-clutter parking_space=* for clearer tagging of different aspects.
Rationale
parking_space=* is currently a mix of different aspects.
- parking_space=normal is unspecific and "subjective" (Talk:Key:parking_space#parking_space=normal?)
- parking_space=disabled, parking_space=parent, parking_space=staff are user groups
- parking_space=disabled requires permits/badges, and can have several levels of disabilities (Talk:Key:parking_space#Additional tags for parking spaces needed, as several groups of disabled people exist.)
- parking_space=private is a legal restriction
- parking_space=delivery, parking_space=charging, parking_space=car_sharing are use case
- parking_space=street is completely unclear. parking=street_side have mentioned it should not be added on amenity=parking_space.
- parking_space=taxi combines are taxis and waiting for hires as criteria.
- parking_space=trailer is ambiguous as documented (Key:parking_space#Common values)
This further makes it impossible to show a combination (eg delivery motorcycles)
- parking_space=disabled can't differentiate between car, and wider accessible van parking, while access_aisle=accessible_van exists.
- access_aisle=accessible_van is unclear in "wider spaces for vans". Is it the aisle, or the vehicle spot being wider? It can be 5ft + 11ft, or 8ft + 8ft, to add up to 16ft in ADA standard.
- access_aisle=disabled
- would have conflicting meaning against parking_space=disabled if the latter includes accessible van parking
- redundant in the literal sense. Of course it's for "disabled". The proper term is "car accessible".
- An aisle can be shared between car and van
Tagging
- parking_space=*: Physical space / design vehicle (standardizes with access=* modes; however this indirect format allows adding of the parking spot itself when legal restriction is unknown, eg aerial imagery, or passing through, removing the need to semi-useless *=unknown)
- parking_space=normal --> parking_space=motorcar : Also used for arrower (eg 8ft) accessible van spot
- parking_space=van : wider (eg 11ft) accessible van spot
- parking_space=taxi definition relaxed to for taxi regardless of usage
- parking_space=bus
- parking_space=motorcycle
- parking_space=hgv
- van=*
- van=designated : added to narrower (eg 8ft) accessible van spot parking_space=motorcar
- parking_space:for=* (or eg access:for=* separately proposed) as interim solution (limitation encountered in community_centre:for=* is acknowledged): User group
- parking_space:for=resident
- parking_space:for=parent
- parking_space:for=staff
- parking_space:for=student (+ access=customers?)
- parking_space=disabled --> parking_space:for=disabled (question of the co-existing disabled=* as the exact restriction is dealt with elsewhere)
- parking_space:for=customers (not the same as access=customers --- can be access=yes)
- parking_space:use=*: Format and purpose of use (exact restriction is recorded in access=*, parking:parking=*, parking:waiting=*, parking:stopping=*, maxstay=* etc)
- parking_space:use=driver
- parking_space:use=passenger
- parking_space=delivery --> parking_space:use=delivery [TBD: or loading zone?]
- parking_space=charging --> parking_space:use=charging
- parking_space:use=car_sharing
- parking_space:use=car_rental (aligns with amenity=car_rental )
- parking_space:trailer=* (or *:trailer=* separately proposed for access:*=*)
- parking_space=caravan --> parking_space:caravans=* (standardized with caravans=*) (or *:caravans=* separately proposed for access:*=*)
- access_aisle=* : This is to mean the aisle itself, not the vehicle spot
- access_aisle=disabled → access_aisle=motorcar : To be used for smaller (eg 5ft) aisle along wider (eg 11ft) van spot
- access_aisle=accessible_van → access_aisle=van : For wider (eg 8ft) aisle along narrower (eg 8ft) van spot
Examples
- Accessible car parking
- Accessible van parking
- 5ft aisle + 11ft spot
- 8ft aisle + 8ft spot
