specify whether trains stop

"The tag train=yes/no is used to specify whether trains stop at a feature such as a train station or platform."

Is this correct? I thought it was to clarify it's type (train, tram, subway etc) as public_transport=station/stop_position on their own are ambiguous. --DaveF63 (talk) 11:51, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

Removed note that tag is used with the 'railway=*' tags

DaveF63, you removed mention of any use of this tag with railway=* features with the comment "Remove notes which say this tag should be used with any of the 'railway=*' tags". However, isn't this tag sometimes used with those features? While I agree that this is usually unnecessary (since the route=train relation can include stops, stations and railway ways as members), is it not in fact used in this way by some mappers? --Jeisenbe (talk) 01:31, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

But it shouldn't be. 'train=yes' is solely a PTv2 tag. It has no correlation with 'railway=*' tags (PTv1). PTv2 requires it because public_transport|station=station/stop_position is ambiguous. 'railway' clearly isn't. PTv2 is purely a duplication of PTv1. It adds no extra quality to the OSM database. Contributors get confused between the two schemas & add erroneous tags to the database. I've been cleaning up various wiki pages (& UK railways) to separate them.--DaveF63 (talk) 11:10, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
Well, it's usually redundant with public_transport=stop_position too: the node is on a railway or a road, so you know if it's for a bus or a train already. And if there is a route relation, that already tells you if a stop_position or station is part of a train or bus or light rail route or whatever, without adding any tags to the node. Perhaps it's better to document that it is sometimes used in that way, but that it is unnecessary and probably due to confusion caused by the poorly thought out public_transport proposal? --Jeisenbe (talk) 06:38, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
I don't see what relevance your comment has with my amendment.--DaveF63 (talk) 12:28, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
The tag is sometimes used with "railway=station" and "railway=platform" features. While this is redundant, the tag is usually redundant. So my recommendation is to describe how the tag is used, inlcuding on "railway=" features, but to also explain that this is not necessary. --Jeisenbe (talk) 12:49, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
