About

This page will track the progress of importing into the OSM database the boundaries and metadata for Tasmanian national parks and other protected areas.

In June 2013 I contacted Felicity Faulkner, Spatial Analyst for the Land Conservation Branch, Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment. She provided me with a shapefile (details below) and gave permission to use the Tasmanian Reserve Estate Spatial Layer in the OSM database, with attribution back to http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/tasreserveestate. The shapefile used in the import has not been released publicly, however I asked Felicity if she would consider uploading it to the Australian Government's http://data.gov.au website so others can also view it. In the meantime, anyone wishing to use the shapefile should contact Felicity directly (contact details at the mentioned URL).

Goals

The primary goal is to identify in the OSM database any areas of land or water that are reserved for conservation and/or recreation purposes. Of particular interest to me personally are national parks and I will be concentrating on those to begin with.

Schedule

  1. Import national parks for areas not yet mapped: complete
  2. Import national parks for areas with some existing data: complete
  3. Import major conservation areas: complete
  4. Import major forestry areas: complete
  5. Import other data: see Collaborative_Australian_Protected_Areas_Database_(CAPAD) for further progress on this.

Import Data

License & Usage Conditions

The data does not appear to be under any particular license, simply Copyright State of Tasmania. It has been requested that the attribution point to the URL http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/tasreserveestate

When requesting the data, I made it clear that users of OSM data are only required to make attribution to Copyright OpenStreetMap contributors - I was told this would be OK.
