OSM Coverage

Leeds city centre is well mapped, with many POIs added. Building developments continue despite the economic climate, so updates are always useful.

Outside of the centre there is good progress. Of all the council regions listed on OSM and OSL differences analysis, Leeds has the most roads. The North side of the city, around Chapel Town, is where most work is needed.

We can trace in road layouts from bing imagery. Some of these areas are now being updated from OS StreetView too. Please follow the editing guidelines given there if you are doing this.

Canal towpaths and locks are mostly mapped, railways are mostly mapped from NPE or Landsat, and may be slightly out compared to GPS readings.

NaPTAN data for West Yorkshire was imported in September 2009, so bus stops might appear in the middle of nowhere if roads have not been added to OSM.

Leeds council covers a large area, with many small towns, villages and rural areas having only main roads mapped. Mapping of fields and woodlands would better reflect the make-up of the area.

ODI Leeds ran Leeds Bins 2020 an import of Leeds Council bin data. The group are active in exploring OSM usage in the UK Public Sector.

https://osm.mathmos.net/postboxes/progress/ is a summary of progress in mapping the 1123 post boxes in the LS postcode area.

Postcode map

Leeds City Council has a postcode map (PDF, 705k) of the Leeds metropolitan area that may be useful in dividing up tasks. As it's copyright, it shouldn't be used to add data to the OSM map.

Long distance paths

These will best be described by relations. Such routes are largely unmapped in OSM. A project has been set up looking at UK long distance paths --LeedsTracker 14:33, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Leeds Country Way

Leeds Country Way is a circular long-distance footpath of 62 miles (99 km) around. Leeds City Council provides further information and maps, though the route is described as well signposted [1].

Dales Way Link

A link to the Dales Way, from Woodhouse to Meanwood Valley, Eccup, Otley Chevin to Ilkley.

The Dales Way Link fron Leeds is here. It has at least one signpost on it (near Burley in Wharfdale), which is more than appear to be on the Harrogate or Bradford sections.

Trans Pennine Trail

The Trans Pennine Trail goes through Leeds, the central portion starts at the Royal Armouries. The route is also NCN Route 67.
