2017 March server maintenance

From OpenStreetMap Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This was a short period of downtime for database maintenance on Sunday 12th March 2017. Database upgrade work was successful, and the database is now back up and running.

The PostgreSQL version was successfully upgraded to version 9.5, and as planned, this was carried out without the need for a dump and reload (which would take a lot longer than one hour)

Original information

The Operations Working Group are planning to upgrade the software which runs the main OpenStreetMap database on Sunday 12th March.

Exact timing?

This is planned for 11:00 until 12:00 UTC on the morning of Sunday 12th March 2017.

We expect that the database upgrade will not take the full hour, and we will endeavour to keep the site online for as much of that period as possible, and have it back to normal status as quickly as possible. However, there's always the chance for things to go wrong, so please plan for the site to be down for the whole period.

What is affected?

The API and all DB dependant services

During the downtime you will not be able to use OpenStreetMap editors to make changes to the map data or to download data.

The only way you might work on the map would be to use JOSM or Merkaartor and download some data before the downtime to edit offline. If you are doing this, you may need to take care with conflict resolution when saving your changes after the API comes back online.

The OpenStreetMap website will also be affected. The plan is to keep the front page map display at openstreetmap.org looking similar to normal. The Export tab will also work, but other areas of the site will be deactivated. You will not be able to login and view/upload GPS traces. Things like user diaries, user edits view, changesets and element browsing screens, will all be deactivated with a holding page during the work.

Planet.osm downloads will remain available but diffs will not be generated during the outage. External services using the API will likely be affected by the API downtime. Any services using diffs will likely not be affected, although there will be no changes while the API is offline.

The forum will be read only (You will be unable to login)

Unaffected

The tile server will continue to serve tiles to all other applications and websites during the work and so maps will continue to display on other websites. No planned downtime, but note that we do not guarantee availability of the tile server even in normal circumstances. See Tile usage policy. This relates to the "standard" OpenStreetMap layer formally known as "mapnik" which is hosted on the OSMF servers. Other layers are hosted elsewhere and will obviously also remain available subject to their normal usage policies and service guarantees.
