About the Campaign

Join the Open Mapping Hub - Eastern and Southern Africa (OMHESA) and the Food and Agricultural Organisation SWALIM (FAOSWALIM), a UN body working towards saving lives of people across the globe through striving towards a sustainable and food secure world for all, in a mapping campaign to create datasets in OpenStreetMap to be used in an impact based early warning system to inform early action, for the much anticipated La Niña Drought in Somalia.

The campaign will run from September 5th to November 2024 - mappers who take part from the start until the end of the campaign will receive a certificate, upon request!

La Niña[1] is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon that results from variation in the sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It occurs on average every two to seven years, and episodes usually last nine to 12 months.

With this campaign, we will be mapping in Somalia, to create datasets to support early warning drought systems so that communities and authorities can plan water resources effectively before the effects of La Nina. We will be working with FAO SWALIM and FAO RTEA

La Nina Development Forecasting

In Sept 2024, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) shared an update [2] of the likelihood of La Niña developing later this year. There is a 60% chance of La Niña conditions emerging towards the end of this year, according to a new Update from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Early warnings and anticipatory action of extreme weather events associated with this major climate phenomenon are vital to save lives and livelihoods, the update adds.

How to take part in the Campaign

We welcome mappers from across the region and globe to participate in this campaign and support [3] through mapping. To take part…

  • Step 1: Register by contacting ESA team on esahub@hotosm.org to get the form.
  • Step 2: Go to the Tasking Manager here.
  • Step 3: Select a task from this [4].
  • Step 4: Start mapping!

Note: Registering helps us to easily stay in touch with everyone contributing to the campaign.

What are we mapping and why?

Our mapping efforts will focus on: Mapping Surface Water Sources the whole of Somalia. This effort is meant to enhance preparedness and emergency response to drought events in the country. Data created will be used by the FAO SWALIM teams in the development of an early warning system which will be used to send messages to communities at risk of drought events. Mapped data will further be used by other humanitarian responders to manage the distribution of water resources in affected communities.
