Tagging Guidelines

This is the convention that seems to have been started by others and that I have been using lately:

  • Motorway: controlled-access highways, either level I or II as defined in the Highways Act. Divided highways (i.e. the TCH) are to have 2 lines, both tagged one-way, single-lane routes (i.e. 11 on the north shore or 7 around Grand Bay) get one.
  • Trunk: Other NHS-defined routes. This would be the non-freeway sections of 1, 2, 7, 15, 16 and 95. Also possibly 8, 11 and 17; as the province has asked that they be added to the system.
  • Primary: The remainder of the 1/2-digit system (i.e. 3, 4, 10); plus most 100-series routes.
  • Secondary: Routes from 200 and above, main unnumbered streets in urban areas (i.e. the Lower Cove Loop in Saint John or St. George Street in Moncton), bypassed former sections of major highways that no longer have a number (i.e. Homestead Road near Moncton, which is the former TCH).
  • Tertiary: Important secondary streets in urban areas, some rural unnumbered roads that are major connecting links between numbered roads. Use sparingly in rural areas.
  • Residential: self-explanatory in urban and suburban areas.
  • Unclassified: Most unnumbered rural roads.

It may be a good idea to make use of the declarations of "through streets" in the various municipalities' traffic bylaws when in doubt:

Completed/Ongoing Imports

Canvec - The Canvec product has been imported for all of NB. There are still a lot of errors to fix from the import so it is a work in progress!

GeoNB - (Ingalls) has been using the GeoNB address points as a reference after collecting addresses by hand. The license was discussed on talk and consensus was it is okay to use.

Possible Data Sources

Geo New Brunswick GeoNB has made data available under the Service New Brunswick Data License Agreement (pdf). This data is under discussion but looks promising!!

Natural Resources Canada (GeoGratis) provides the NTS data as .osm files, and the community is currently working to import the data. See CanVec

GeoBase - Provides Hydrological Features that are available to use, although many features are included in CanVec, please contact the talk-ca mailing list for details.

Statistics StatsCan - Provided road names data, please contact the talk-ca list also.
