Crossrail relation 2956938 is a large-bore RER-style tunnelling project running east-west under the central London. The core portals are at Crossrail already publish GIS data in raster form via WMS [1], [2]. As a publicly-owned company, it should be possible to receive this under the OGL in advance of opening.

Route

There are two full-size bores, these are generally quite widely separated, with one bore often under a pre-existing road or tube line, and the second bore significantly off-line along another pile-free alignment.

The vertical curve is quite deep, dipping down still farther between stations to use gravimetric potential when accelerating away from stations and passes from east-to-west:

Crossrail GIS

Crossrail state that they use the Open Government Licence for materials, though it does not explicitly say this on the data from the public GIS server, so will follow up with a FOIA request explicitly for a dataset under the OGL.

Public WMS server:

nb. A previous approach was held off because of the untimely passing of the leader of the Crossrail GIS Team's lead; it would be polite to not try again before mid-2013 or so.

Public Domain statements from Crossrail

On 27 June 2013, Crossrail (again) confirmed via email to Amaroussi that alignment documents submitted as part of the now Crossrail Act show were "already in the public domain". At this stage it is only possible that a design alignment based on the Act would be the most reliable for now, but I did allow some creative licence for the modifications that happened after the Act came to force. Please be aware that I have hand-drawn the lines on Potlatch:

Dear Antje,

Thank you for your telephone enquiry on the 26 June 2013 regarding Crossrail maps and Open Database Licence.

The information on the route alignment in its current state does not represent the final as-built alignment. Tunnelling on the route is still in progress and there is the potential for some minor deviation due to geotechnical, engineering or other adverse conditions which would in turn affect the track alignments. Once the installation of the track is complete and handed over to the infrastructure manager it is the intention that details of the alignment will be placed in the public domain. This is expected to be in late 2018.
The alignment documents submitted as part of the Parliamentary process of the Crossrail Bill show the limits of deviation of the route and these are already in the public domain. These are accessible from the Crossrail website at http://www.crossrail.co.uk/about-us/crossrail-bill-supporting-documents/consolidated-plans-sections-november-2007
The Near You section on the Crossrail website shows the progress of the Tunnel Boring Machines through a map visualisation. As part of this there is an indicative layer, based on the Tunnel Alignment, against which the TBMs are mapped. This is published as a Web Map Service (WMS) layer within the map, although no detail can be gained, it is purely there to show the TBM progress.

I hope this information is helpful, but if you require any further assistance then please feel free to contact a Helpdesk on 0345 602 3813, or by email to helpdesk@crossrail.co.uk
