East Lothian is also the name of the surrounding Council Area.

Welcome to the Dunbar Openstreetmap Project Page. We hope that you will join with us to explore and map our town and enjoy learning some of the tools that we have available. There numerous mappers in and around Dunbar with a wealth of knowledge and from a variety backgrounds and ages. Mapping in the town ranges between roads, cycleways, natural features, amenities, sustainable infrastructure, historic monuments and almost anything else you can imagine.

East Lothian Public Transport Network Do you know where all the buses go? If so, help us to map the bus routes in East Lothian. These are tagged as 'relations' in OpenStreetMap http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Relation. Contact morag@sustainingdunbar.org if you want to know more about adding local bus routes
Local cycle paths There are lots of off-road paths and short-cuts which are not yet mapped. Take a GPS next time you're out on your bike and let's get the network online. See this page http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mountain_biking for a discussion of tags to use for off-road paths
Speed-limits and lighting In the town itself there is still lots of information to add about features such as speed limits and lighting. These can be added as tags to the highways.
Paths and Pavements The word 'pavement' is not used in OpenStreetMap as this causes confusion in other parts of the world. The simplest method of adding pavements alongside roads is to tag the associated highway with sidewalk=both/left/right/none and to use highway=footway where the path diverges from the carriageway. On places such as Kellie Road in Dunbar, the grass verge is mapped as a separate feature and the 'pavement' is a separate highway.
Scotland's Access Legislation (http://www.outdooraccess-scotland.com/legislation/) means that everyone has a right to use every path responsibly (except where these are immediately adjacent to the road, and therefore technically 'footways'). Therefore it isn't usually necessary to differentiate between cycle paths and footpaths, so the generic highway=path can be used, and only add extra information id if cycling or walking is specifically banned. Use highway=cycleway where the route is part of a strategic network for bikes
Cycleways We are keen to develop a network of strategic cycle routes which are safe, direct, continuous and well-lit. These are being indicated on the map as highway=cycleway. Do add to this network, or if you disagree with some of the designations, let's start a discussion here.

Some of the things you need to know
To show a location to someone else, zoom into the area that you want. Click Permalink on the bottom right hand side, then copy the URL that is in the address bar of your browser and paste it into an e-mail. When they click on it, it will take them directly to that part of the map.

- Learning to edit this wiki or Wikipedia is a very useful skill. It well worth spending 20 minutes on this Tutorial
- If you go to the Wikipedia entry for Dunbar, on the top right hand corner is a set of coordinates. Click on these and you will see a wide selection of maps
- Keepright is a page dedicated to the small mapping errors that always crop up. Looking over this not only helps keep the map clean of these errors but helps us learn how to avoid errors in the future.

The Openstreetmap community is not allowed to copy other maps due to copyright restrictions. You will also find that a lot of the satellite images are out of date and that our map is already more accurate . The maps below are only here to show what other groups are doing.

- Google street view Taking information concerning Street names, Bus stop Locations etc is not allowed because it is derived data from copyright images
- The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) uses CANMAP (doesn't work with Safari) to list places of historical interest. Their information is copyright so we are not allowed to place this information directly onto our map. However, they are now accepting public photos to be included on their site. A large number of their locatons have not been photographed recently. This means that by finding these places and giving them photos, we are not only helping the national archive, the photos we take will be more accessible to the public. This is due to the licence they give to user generated content. By collaborating with them you will not only find out a lot more about these locations you will be letting them know we are here. You also have the options of putting the photos on Geograph, Webshots or Flickr.This is an excellent chance for bit of exploring.Their building is located here

Examples and Inspiration
In this section there are examples of mapping and derived maps for your interest and inspiration. Please remember that it is very important that we do not copy other map's data into our map.

- The Best of OSM is a website that shows some of the best mapping in OSM, it is worth looking at the zoos and golf courses and maybe we can get parts of Dunbar in there!
- On the main map page of OSM by clicking on the '+' sign on the top right hand corner you can get the map represented as Open Cycle Map or Transport and MapquestOpen, if you zoom in far enough you can also choose to view the raw data.
