There was a mapping weekend in Edinburgh 25 and 26 August 2007.

This page could be rewritten to detail this past event in the past tense.

The Edinburgh International Festival runs from Friday 10 August 2007 until Sunday 2 September 2007.

What needs to be done?

Mainly working in the area bounded by Easter Road/Holyrood Park in the East; The South Suburban Railway and Cameron Toll in the South and West; Water of Leith and Pilrig street on the North and West. Hopefully this area will be complete by the end of August. The suburban areas outside central zone shown on map below still need lots of work.

See http://almien.co.uk/Sketch/view.php?id=57&tab=& for a map. Anything within the red line is roughly what we are aiming to be complete by the end of August.

  • Various name filling, from old data (from before ways) that has been wayed, or drawn from Yahoo!_Aerial_Imagery.
  • More streets added
  • City Centre to be comprehensively, named checked and filled, so that the city centre is complete.

Planning

Shaun McDonald's house can be used as a base in the West of Edinburgh if needed. There is a high frequency bus service into the City Centre, and 3 train stations within 3 miles.

From Chris Fleming: although infoseed have volunteered their space to help with any potential mapping party (http://infoseed.org.uk/tiki-index.php)

The infoseed space is now confirmed.

Getting Here

By Air

Edinburgh is served by the Edinburgh International Airport in the west of the city. To get into the city centre, either take the Airlink bus for either £3 single or £5 return; or you can take the local 35 for £1, which takes longer.

By Rail

Edinburgh is served by a number of Rail Stations. The main stations are Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket. There are smaller rail stations on the outskirts of the city that may be useful if you are staying or mapping in those areas. These include: Newcraighall (a Park and Ride site) and Brunstane in the South East; Dalmeny on the Fife line; Slateford, Wester Hailes, and Curriehill on the Edinburgh - Glasgow via Shotts line; and Edinburgh Park on the Edinburgh - Glasgow via Falkirk and Edinburgh - Bathgate lines.

You may be able to get cheap tickets from MegaTrains on some select routes.

By Coach

There are a number of coach companies run to/from Edinburgh Bus station on St. Andrew Square.

Getting About

Getting around for mapping is easy with frequent bus services on most routes - generally lower frequency services at weekends. Two major bus companies operating within the city

Lothian buses is most comprehensive

get map of routes here http://www.lothianbuses.co.uk/pdfs/routemap100607.pdf

Fares £1 flat rate any distance on any service or £2.50 for unlimited day ticket

First Group

http://www.firstgroup.com/index.php

Day ticket is £2.30 for Edinburgh and immediate surrounding area

Cycling is reasonably provided for but the topography can make it hard work.

Car is fine for the more outlying areas but the usual problem of city traffic carrying you too fast to note detail or stopping you completely applies. By car - all central area is controlled with expensive short term parking on Saturady though most restrictions do not apply on Sunday. Council guide is found at http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/internet/Transport/Motor_vehicles_roads_and_parking/Parking/CEC_visitors__quick_guide_to_parking_in_edinburgh

Accommodation

Festival time is busiest time for accommodation but tourist office is at http://www.edinburgh.org/accom/

If travelling, then I would recommend finding accommodation before booking travel.

If you are still looking for accommodation now you can get cheep rooms out at Heriot-Watt University - You can book them through lastminute.com

Who can be there

If you are new to OpenStreetMap then you can just turn up at the meeting place where you will get a full briefing. A notepad or camera is the only thing that you need to bring. Everyone is welcome.

To help the organisers prepare Openstreetmap members please add your name to the following list if you can attend:
