Edinburgh/MappingParty/2011-04-10
Where, When and why
The Mapping Party will be held in Peebles on Sunday 10th April 2011, We will be able to trace large area's in an around Peebles first which will allow our mappers to go to the places that particularly interest them and check that the tracing is correct.
We will be meeting at the west side of thecar park at 10am. If you can't make it then or would like to meet up with us later in the day please contact --Central America 10:31, 29 March 2011 (BST)
The mapping party is organised in Edinburgh but we will be mapping the areas around Peebles There are a number of different reasons for mapping this area. The initiator is that there is an orienteering meet in Peebles on that day. However there is an opportunity try different mapping techniques for remote mappers and there is a large selection of opportunities for Walking, Cycling, and canoeing on the day. We will also be investigating some of the derived maps with wikipedia links and mapping some of the historical locations using data from the Royal Commision on the Ancient and Historical Monuments Scotland and Openorienteering. After we have finished our map will be featured in the Peebleshire News.
Groups we are in Contact with
While we are in Peebles we hope to meet up with volunteers from
Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club
and
Research and Remote Mapping
We are lucky that there is good coverage of Peebles on OS_OpenData_StreetView and Bing Arial imagery to do a lot of decent tracing before we get on the ground.
Historic Mapping
We have also been give permission to use the Canmore_ID from The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland
Please see here
http://canmoremapping.rcahms.gov.uk/
This is a beta version of their map. We have requested that in the future they will add openstreetmap as a base layer-this is still under discussion. The base layer of the map is from the Ordnance survey and we are not allowed to copy that map. After you have zoomed into the detailed area you will find a number of blue dots. Choose the select button, hold down the shift key then select the dot that you are interested in. This will bring up information about the monuments in that location. Each monument will have a Canmore_ID. When you trace the monument from Bing imagery please add the Canmore_ID=******* tag to the building or location, you may also add the name of the building. You may also use the Key:website tag to point directly to the canmore page.
By adding the Canmore_ID we will eventually be able to create a derived historical map, RCHAMS is hoping to encourage people to get out, find these locations and photograph them, this will help them find out the state of the buildings for future reference. It also gives us a chance to find things that could easily be overlooked.
Walking
There are lots of walks at all levels that may be of interest
This pdf is copyright and can only be used as a reference for planning
Cycling
There are many Cycle trails in Glentress Forest Please be careful with any tracing here as there has already been a big effort to do some mapping here
Canoeing
Tracing the riverbanks of the River Tweed would be a good challenge. please be careful not to delete any of the tags used by Open Whitewater Map
Wikipedia
You may be interested to use the Key:wikipedia tag which will show up on this map
Other maps
Please check this list for other derived maps that may interest you.
A very nice example of the use of Openstreetmap for orienteering events here
