GeographyAwarenessWeek 2014
Geography Awareness Week 2014 takes place 16 - 22 November 2014.
For basic information about GAW, visit National Geographic's web page here. This year's theme is "The Future of Food", so please add your ideas for food-centric events using OpenStreetMap.
Suggested activities include mapping groceries, farmers markets, community gardens, food distribution centers, identification of food deserts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_desert) both domestically and internationally. The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT http://hot.openstreetmap.org/) and US State Dept’s Mapgive (http://mapgive.state.gov/) might offer additional opportunities for contributing.
Sterling Quinn has jump-started the mapping process with both a tagging scheme over on the Food_security as well as his presentation from State of the Map-US 2014. Both of these are useful starting points for hosting a mapping event.

Hosting an Event
- Your event can be an outside surveying event or an inside editing event.
- Design your event friendly to newcomers, make sure there's someone available to instruct on how to survey using Field_Papers and how to edit OpenStreetMap using the Id editor.
- Your event location should preferably have fast internet, comfortable seating, and work tables. If you're working at a school, bear in mind that their technologies might be constrained (older equipment, no admin privileges, etc.) and plan for work-arounds.
- Changes committed to OpenStreetMap should contain the hashtag, #GAW in the changeset comment.
- Link to a post-event survey to gauge interest and ideas for improving future events.
