Gulf Coast Terrace locations is an import of a terrace dataset which is of type vector covering Gulf Coast. The import is currently (March 2025) at the planning stage.

Goals

Make terrace locations and build years along the Gulf Coast public information. Ducks Unlimited has worked with partners to build terraces in multiple locations to help re-establish marsh. More information about these can be found at https://www.ducks.org/conservation/where-ducks-unlimited-works/gulf-coastal-prairie/marsh-terraces-as-a-conservation-practice

Schedule

Many of the terraces up to 2018 have been digitized by Annina Rupe and she has given permission to include these in this dataset. If this plan gets approval I will immediately start importing what we have and digitizing other terraces not in the dataset.

Import Type

This will be a one time data import that I'll perform in batches using JOSM. I ran a few tests by selecting a single terrace field and copying it to the editable copy JOSM pulls. The linear features were slightly off imagery so I moved them to better match a few of the imagery sources available. I make sure the tags man_made:marsh_terrace and start_date:appropriate year are present and then I save changes and upload.

Data Preparation

Data Reduction & Simplification

There will not be any data reduction or simplification. I may have to edit shoreline features that are currently within OSM and interfere with the terrace features.

Tagging Plans

man_made:marsh_terrace start_date:appropriate year

Data Merge Workflow

Team Approach

Working with one other team member. I will start at the further East terrace field in Louisiana and they will start along the Texas Coast to the West.

Select a single terrace field and copying it to the editable copy JOSM pulls. The linear features were slightly off imagery so I moved them to better match a few of the imagery sources available. I make sure the tags man_made:marsh_terrace and start_date:appropriate year are present and then I save changes and upload.

Conflation

Shoreline along the Gulf Coast is always changing because of marsh subsidence, accretion, and changes in water level. There may be some shoreline features within the terrace fields. These will most likely be removed if they are not accurate anymore.
