Kuo-Yu Chuang (slayer) | Heather Leson | Taiwan/Taiwan | Kuo-Yu Chuang (a.k.a. slayer) is part of a cadre of OSM leaders in Taiwan who are making huge strides to connect communities and governments in mapping for disaster response. Over the years, I have collaborated with Slayer on various map and technical projects (professionally and personally). His style is thoughtful with a strong sense of humour. Having worked in Location-Based Service (LBS) and disaster response with ICT for years, including his startup, GeoThings, he has leadership roles in number of disaster management and open standards organizations. Slayer is one of the organizers of SOTM Taiwan and is an active community SOTM Asia. He has been a large supporter of HOT in Asia and would be a great addition to the Board for strategic planning on many fronts. | OSM Diary |
Ahasanul Hoque | Pete Masters | Bangladesh / Bangladesh | I think Ahasan would be a great addition to the board for a number of reasons. Firstly, I am constantly impressed by his vision and commitment to the principles of open data and how it can bring benefit to local people. His energy in this is phenomenal and his approach impressive. Secondly, I am immensely proud of what he and his team have done with OSM Bangladesh. Having worked with Ahasan in 2015 in Dhaka I can attest to the staggering growth in this community (and not just in terms of numbers). Lastly, he has a wise head, a considered manner and is a pleasant person to be around. I am very happy to be the one to nominate him. | OSM Diary |
Pete Masters | Claire Halleux / Jorieke Vyncke | British / Scotland | From his roles at MSF Pete brings extensive experience, including field experience, of humanitarian aid work, but as the driving force behind the spectacularly successful series of Missing Maps events in London, he has also embraced the sense of community and fun involved in attracting and motivating OpenStreetMap volunteers. Part of the success of these events has been Pete's efforts to bridge an information gap, feeding back stories from the field very directly to the people doing the mapping. In his manifesto he mentions this kind of improved information flow as one of several ideas to improve HOT on a wider scale. With election to HOT's board Pete will be well placed, and with the skills, experience and understanding to deliver on this. | OSM diary |
Melanie Eckle | Martin Dittus / Blake Girardot | Germany/German | Melanie Eckle is a candidate with a unique profile. On one hand she is an early-stage GIS researcher with an impressive track record and a focus on HOT. In this role she is already a unique bridge between HOT and many international research communities, and her input and connections will be invaluable when we seek to form deeper and more impactful partnerships with a wide range of institutions. Her own research is rigorous and evidence-based, and reflects a deep understanding of HOT as a social and technical platform, with a specific focus on the human experience of mappers and its impact on HOT outcomes. Melanie has also spent time in Nepal, where she did HOT research in partnership with KLL. Additionally, she has been an important driver behind the disastermappers heidelberg, a young organisation that has already had impact beyond their means, and she has significant experience in community settings and volunteering. In person she always comes across as approachable, curious, supportive, and compassionate; a rare disposition for such an accomplished profile. For these reasons, I think she is uniquely qualified to represent HOT on an international stage. | OSM Diary |
