Legal access restriction for horse-drawn  carriages and other horse-drawn vehicles like  wagons and  carts.

If horse riding is allowed, horse-drawn vehicles may nevertheless be forbidden and vice versa: on ways were horse-drawn vehicles are allowed riding on horseback may be forbidden. See also horse=*, in the OSM access-hierarchy carriage=* is not a subcategory of horse=*, these categories do not overlap; the former is a member of vehicle=* the latter is not. horse=* in OSM specifically refers to riding on horseback[1], not to usage of horses in general.

This is a legal restriction, don't use it to tag the suitability for carriage driving. To tag the suitability for trail riding you can use horse_scale=*.

In the UK horse-drawn carriages are not permitted on motorways and a very small number of other roads, such as the Conwy Tunnel and the Penmaenbach Tunnels on the A55. They are permitted to use restricted byways.

In general the tag is likely to be used in two special cases:

  • Motor roads which specifically exclude horse-drawn carriages.
  • Paths and tracks where they are allowed.

For values see access=*.

Notes and references

  1. The Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals also uses the term "riders on horseback"
  2. In Dutch legalese, animal-drawn vehicles are bespannen wagens, which are among the various classes of slow road users banned by this sign (some of which are not depicted). More specific traffic signs for bespannen wagens no longer exist since 1991.
  3. In Ohio, horses-and-buggies are considered roadworthy unless otherwise specified. Nevertheless, when a "Share the Road" sign is posted as a warning to motorists, buggy drivers have more certainty as to a legal right-of-way.
