For tagging the driving side in all bidirectional traffic.

Add to the country relation to describe the global rule. And on ways only when describing an exception.

How to map

Add driving_side=left/right to the country's relation or to the highway. Only add it to a highway when it's driving side is an exception to the general rule (and check that the general rule is tagged in your country relation).

If the highway's opposite lanes have a physical barrier between them (i.e. they are represented as parallel ways on OSM), then driving_side=* should not be used.

Software support

This key is taken into consideration when rendering streets with OSM2World.

OSRM and the Mapbox Directions API outputs the driving side on each step based on known country defaults, which can be explicitly overridden using this tag. Some guidance instructions differ based on the driving side. The Mapbox Navigation SDK uses the driving side to accurately depict roundabout and U-turn lane icons.
