Most used values

According to taginfo the most used values are yes, no and private. In the context of fishing these values have the following meaning:

  • yes - the area is open for fishing by anyone with a fishing license or permit (if the area requires one). See access=permit for a useful combination if you know that the fishing location requires a fishing permit. Fishing permits are usually released locally or online (see permit_release).
  • no - the area is prohibited for fishing
  • private - the area is available for fishing after paying a tax or a fee to a third-party entity
  • catch_and_release - fishing is allowed but it is mandatory to practice the wikipedia:catch and release. Usually a daily or seasonal permit is required (see access=permit).
  • permit_release - emission of fishing permits for rivers where fishing is permitted on a daily or multi-day basis. It is usually a hut, a tourist information center, or a bar.

How to map

Adding fishing tag on water elements like lakes, ponds or other polygonal elements.

For water elements with regular non island geometry add the according fishing=* tag to the way.

For water elements with irregular island geometry create a multipolygon relation and add the according fishing=* tag  in the relation. Add the inner and outer roles for the specific geometries.
