maxlength expresses a legal vehicle length limit for using the way it is added to. If no unit is included, the value is assumed to be in metres.
In the United States, laws and signs express length limits for semi-trailer trucks (maxlength:hgv_articulated=*) in feet as measured from the kingpin to either the rear axle (KPRA) or the center of the rear axle group, depending on the state. Both formulas exclude most of the tractor unit's length. [1]
Can also be used on campsites, ferry lines, etc to express the maximum length of vehicles allowed. If rules and signs indicates that there is no length limit tag this as maxlength=none. I.e., on a caravan_site=* this indicates that motorhomes of all lengths can be accomodated.
