Use the source:geometry=* tag to indicate the source of the geometry of objects added to OpenStreetMap. "Geometry" in this case means the shape and position of a node or way. If added to a way, there is no need to add the tag to the individual nodes that make up the way.

  • This tag is especially useful when an object's geometry has been imported as it helps to keep a record of where the original data came from.
  • The tag can also be used when tracing from aerial imagery, however you may wish to add a source to the changeset instead (which several editors, like iD, already have a place to add it).

Keep in mind that the current recommendation is to add source tags to the changeset instead of individual objects. For more information, see the Key:source page.

For tagging sources of other non-geometry information see source=*.

Other versions of this tag are used for the same purpose:

source:position=*
source:shape=*
source:outline=*
source:area=*
source:footprint=*
