MapQuest/Critical Addresses
If you know about the current state of affairs, please help keep everyone informed by updating this information. (Discussion)
What are these files for?
MapQuest is providing several address files that contain user-provided latitude and longitude locations across the world. Our users provided these exact locations to us so that they could be mapped correctly on our MapQuest maps.
There are currently three (3) main files - one for the United States, one for Canada and one for Europe and several updated files for all regions; their download locations are here:
- Canada | 2011-04-04 Update | 2011-05-31 Update
- Europe | 2011-04-04 Update | 2011-05-31 Update
- United States | 2011-03-14 Update | 2011-04-04 Update | 2011-04-25 Update | 2011-05-31 Update
Please feel free to update OpenStreetMap with this information. You'll need to note the latitude/longitude 6-digit precision in these files and chances are you'll have to divide by 10,000 to get proper decimal placement, depending on how you view/use the data.
We didn't want to just import these addresses directly into OSM, but wanted them to be available to anyone that wanted to have them. To be clear:
- these addresses are user provided
- there is a high degree of ground-truth from these users
- they wanted to be in the data and be correctly mapped
- we've checked with our lawyers, and yes, you can have them - unencumbered!
Also, things you need to know when looking at these files:
- Addresses are repeated if a cardinal direction is in the street
- There are also block ranges
- Lat/Longs have no decimal points, but are consistent in having 6 places to the right of the decimal
We'll post updates to these files in an on-going basis.
Conversion
Our good friend, Ian, has written a script to convert the files listed on the MapQuest wiki page into OSM format! Check out the code here on GitHub: https://gist.github.com/e18eb853907a73ff96e8. Thanks Ian, you rock!
Converted Files
Ian used his script to convert these address files into a sensible OSM format. If you plan on massaging these and importing them into OSM, please note it here:
