weeklyOSM updates the community, on a weekly basis, about what is going on in the OSM Universe. weeklyOSM is intended for everyone, from experienced mappers to new OSM members. It is created by mappers and OSM enthusiasts. Contributors to weeklyOSM in all languages are always welcome. Due to the enormous workload (52 issues per year, no vacations, no holidays) new languages can only be set up if three mappers agree to cooperate.
Independence
weeklyOSM is independent of all organisations and companies. This applies to OSMF, HOT, FOSSGIS ... and all companies (which are not listed here).
Free / Non-free Software
weeklyOSM is a voice/proponent for OpenStreetMap, a collection of free data that is not exclusively created by free software. Therefore we do not limit our reporting to free software. Where appropriate, we point out the licence of a software product we mention.
Contents
weeklyOSM generally aims to refrain from personal opinions and political statements. This can be deviated from, at times, by using a formulation such as "We/the editors/weeklyOSM feel that...". Articles from company blogs are only reported if they are news. weeklyOSM is not an advertising platform for companies.
There is a section "Do you know...". This is used to include notes to introduce new readers to OSM tools (or similar).
Vandalism and trolls
Vandalism is not reported in order not to incite imitators and not to provide a forum for narcissistic personalities. "Vandalism" by companies and organisations is not vandalism but misuse of OpenStreetMap; this is reported.
Languages and Editors
weeklyOSM currently (May 2020) publishes in 10 languages (English, Japanese, Spanish, Russian, Czech, French, Portuguese (PT), Portuguese (BR), Turkish and German) and currently has 54 active contributors. We count 302 guest authors with between 1 and 3967 contributions each, including 56 former (or current guest) authors with more than 100 edits.

What do you need the grant money for?
We want to understand what you plan to buy, how much you plan to buy, and why this will help you to scale your community mapping efforts. There are two tables for you to fill in your response, and you may add more rows as needed. Some examples are in the table for your reference. You are welcome to use a different format in your response, but please make sure to include these details.
Status quo In order to guarantee almost simultaneous publication in all languages, TheFive volunteered to create the open source content management system OSMBC, which is available on GitHub. OSMBC, on the one hand maps the workflow and allows communication between the editors, and on the other, allows article by article translation. If the editors are not perfectly bilingual, we often use translation tools. Since the quality of DeepL (https://www.deepl.com/translator) is superior to other translation tools, OSMBC includes a switch to activate free translation in DeepL.
This switch integrates the DeepL translation via its API in OSMBC, to allow a continuous workflow for our editors
What we need
As mentioned above, we are currently translating with the free version of DeepL and would like to use the DeepL API to simplify and speed up the translation process. This would save a lot of time and enable us to reach our goal of publishing OSM News in 10 languages in a short timeframe (2 days). Of course, people could use the time saved to do some OSM Mapping so that they know what they are talking about :-) This week we received requests to produce two more languages: Polish and Italian, making a total of 12 languages. Since DeepL offers Chinese (simplified), we can imagine producing a Chinese version as well, but need to talk to the community in Taiwan. So we would like to use DeepL to translate into 13 languages.

We hereby request 700 € for two years. - This could cover new languages like Polish, Italian and Chinese.

It is recommended that this supports mission of the OSM Foundation and your local community. Please provide us with any information you think is relevant including the metrics you expect to achieve. Please write 100-200 words.
- Translations could be accelerated.
- Editors could save a lot of time.
- It is conceivable that other languages could also be included if there are fewer than three translators/editors (our current entry hurdle).
- Also conceivable is an automatic translation of weeklyOSM into Chinese.
Do you receive funding from any other sources at the moment?

If there is anything which you would like OSMF to support you with in order to strengthen your project, please let us know. For example, this could include building relationships with OSM communities, sourcing updated imagery for mapping projects, or guidance on how to use some of the tools we have created. We want to do our best to support OSM communities, so please let us know what you need. Please write no more than 150 words.
- The idea of weeklyOSM is to collect relevant OSM news from all over the world, process it and translate it into as many languages as possible. This should help to inform the community as comprehensively as possible and overcome language barriers.
- weeklyOSM is independent of all organisations and companies. This applies to OSMF, HOT, FOSSGIS ... and all other companies not listed here. Nevertheless, we would be happy if our current issue (in whatever language) would appear on the start page of the Wiki on an equal footing with "Use OpenStreetMap", "Contribute free map data" and "Software Development". We would also like to point out that the editorial staff are not subject to OSMF supervision.
