Mapping party

Mapping parties are events where anyone can come and participate in the OpenStreetMap project. OpenStreetMap is a free, open source map that can be contributed, edited and used by anyone anywhere. Mapping parties are social events where experienced and new mappers can meet to share and learn more about the project. The events are generally held in a public place, and allow time for discussion, mapping and editing. The event is open to all. Tathva is the annual technical festival if National Institute of Technology Calicut. This time, Tathva ([1]) is witnessing FOSS events in co-operation with the Free Software User Group Calicut(FSUG-CALICUT[2]). The Mapping Party is organized and conducted by GeoHackers ([3]).

It's fun. It's free. You can help. Hey the party has started! :D

How should the map look like?

Well, as this is the first time we are conducting a mapping event, there are a lot things to be taken care of. An example of a similar campus map is http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=38.98774&lon=-76.94211&zoom=16&layers=B000FTF We should be trying to map the NIT-C campus with that much details.

Achievements & Learnings

  1. Two people should be at the venue since the previous day.
  2. Posters, Flex, publicity systems.
  3. To make others recognize that we are receptive and trying to help them.
  4. Venue should be easily reachable and recognizable.
  5. Tagging seems to be more attractive to the people as it gives them a closer view how to go into details. So the event should be planned in a way such that tagging and collecting data are done in a proper way.
  6. Proper plan to manage finance.
