The National Library of Scotland (NLS) has a large collection of georeferenced Out-of-Copyright maps available online of the United Kingdom. Additionally it has other non georeferenced maps, principally for Scotland, which may be of interest.

NLS provides a free and subscription map API enabling you to embed certain map layers in your own website or as a layer inside desktop GIS software. There are a number of additional Out of Copyright map overlay layers which are useful to OpenStreetMap mappers.

Free and subscription map API

NLS have a free Historic Maps api of maps of Great Britain from the 1920s to the 1940s (including 1:1 million to 1:63,360 map series) which means you can add map layers to your own slippy map instance or other services. Map tile delivery of this layer currently free from the NLS servers, available under CC-BY-SA 3.0.

In September 2015, NLS also launched an Historic Maps Subscription api of selected maps of Great Britain and London. These are primarily intended for external institutions or applications making more intense website usage of NLS historic map layers and are delivered using the Tileserver platform.

Other georeferenced maps (for OSM editing)

 The following additional map layers can be used for contributing to OpenStreetMap/OpenHistoricalMap. To use these layers in other applications please contact NLS.

In addition to the API map layers, there are a number of additional Out of Copyright map overlay layers which are useful to OpenStreetMap/OpenHistoricalMap mappers. All overlays currently available can be viewed on the NLS Explore Georeferenced Maps viewer. Detailed guidance on using all of their imagery for OpenStreetMap is available here.

NLS is happy to have OpenStreetMap make use of these additional georeferenced maps for deriving information and there is dialogue between NLS Senior Curator of Maps, Chris Fleet and a number of OSM mappers in Scotland, England and Ireland to continue to assist this process.

If you wish to use these layers beyond the OSM environment in other applications, please contact NLS. The National Library of Scotland generally is happy to grant free use for non-commercial or private uses, but there are usually fees for commercial use. Read Further information. Update on re-using NLS georeferenced layers - December 2021

NLS has created a new guide to Re-using georeferenced Layers in OSM, as part of a wider set of guides on Re-using georeferenced maps. The URLs to the specific georeferenced layers listed below are still valid, but it is now easier to obtain these, as well as many other georeferenced layers, directly following the Where to find Layer URLs guide.

Using the NLS historical mapping for OSM editing

You can manually add the following TMS layers to JOSM TMS (via preferences). These will be available automatically in JOSM in due course. Addition to Potlatch is coming soon. When using these sources for OSM map editing its is requested that you add a "source=NLS Historic Maps" tag or similar.

  • NLS - OS 25-inch County 1892-1905 - Max zoom 18 (This layer is now complete as of July 2015 but please bear in mind coverage is only of the more settled parts of Scotland)
