Nottingham/Street Names
This page brings together various information on naming of Nottingham streets: such as progress, OS Locator, ITO OSM Analysis etc. Street names have been sourced from surveys, local knowledge, old maps, imported bus stop data (NaPTAN), OS OpenData (StreetView and Locator). Ideally all street names would be double checked by survey: certainly re-checking discrepancies has highlighted the occasional problem with OSGB data.
Availability of OS Data has enabled a much more precise handle on how many streets need to be named. An initial analysis done in May 2010 is shown below. Current statistics can be obtained from ITO. Mid-February 2011, the City of Nottingham has about 450 outstanding names (86.5%), Broxtowe and Rushcliffe very few, and another 450 or so in Gedling. It seems a reasonable goal to survey the missing names in the city by the end of 2011.
Street name Completeness : May 2010
Recent sterling work by Robert Harris and Tim François has enabled detailed analysis of the completeness of OSM in the Nottingham area. This uses the OS OpenData Locator file and various php and PostGIS wizardry to do fuzzy matching of street names. I have further used PostGIS to locate numbers of streets in each cake slice. I hope to post lists of missing streets with location links (as was done in Port-au-Prince) for each slice in the near future. For now here is a start at the headline figures. My estimate of around 6000 roads was surprisingly close, but the bad news is that there are still 18% to name, and probably a similar percentage to map.
