OSMatrix (website) was a tool for visualising mapping progress/quality on various metrics. Developed by the Geography department of the University of Heidelberg, OSMatrix provides an overlay of hexagonal cells visualizing a range of metrics for the data in each cell.
An earlier version made an appearance during the Haiti earthquake response mapping efforts (or perhaps a different tool with the same name) This used a simple grid, more like the QualityStreetMap tool.
A successor of the OSMatrix is the OhsomeHeX (OpenStreetMap History eXplorer).
