Mapping process and community

Mapping Success Stories

Success stories are designed to highlight important contributions. Have you significantly improved the cartography of a country (added a new line, a power station, etc.)? Don't be shy, let us know below.

  • Tobias [2025-02]: Before mapping activity the grid map quality was quite mediocre. Existing larger holes have been fixed. Now the map matches offical TSO maps in the "master plan".

Encountered Problems and Places to Improve

  • The satellite images were not that good for most regions, so there is need to combine different available sources.
  • One line to Zambia could be closed but this line is not connected to the larger national grid.
  • Multiple remote regions could be connected to the grid.
  • Some power plants could be connected.
  • One line in the west could not be finished. From TSO maps this lines is still under construction and has not been closed for the regions were the satellite data was very bad.
  • Some lines splits are not solved.
  • Multiple lines between Dodoma and the coast needs to be double checked if they are in operation. Here also not all towers and lines could be closes with current satellite data.

Use of mapping strategies

Mapping strategies refer to Power networks/Guidelines#Mapping strategies. They are used for a methodically improvement of OSM database. Once you fully applied a strategy on this country, you should add your name, date, strategy and comment below. In this way, other user can see if it worth to engage new investigations.
