Proposal
- Follow local convention when tagging name=*
- First Chinese name of a feature can be tagged in the name:zh=* value. In Greater China area, it should follow the script and language usage preference of local community, if there's a local Chinese community then their preference should also be followed, otherwise the variants used here can be typed in a first-come-first-serve basis.
- name:zh-Hant=* or name:zh-Hans=* can be used to represent Traditional/Simplified Chinese transliteration of the Chinese name respectively when the name:zh=* is using alternative script.
- name:zh-[ISO 639-2] like name:zh-CN or name:zh-TW can be used to represent name of a feature when the region name the feature differently.
- name:zh-[ISO 15024]-[ISO 639-2] like name:zh-Hans-TW can be used to represent regional name in a script that is not commonly used by the region.
- name:zh-Arab, name:zh-Nshu, name:zh-Tibt, name:zh-Mong can be used to represent Chinese names written in these other scripts like Arabic, Nushu, Tibetan, Mongolian.
- Other Chinese variant languages like Min-Nan, Cantonese, Hakka, and such please use relevant ISO 639-3 code. Note that some of them are not defaulted to use Han script, but use some other script like Latin script instead.
- Please do not use ISO 639-6 code to represent dialects or languages that have not gain their own ISO 639-3 code as ISO 639-6 have been deprecated.
- Use zh-Latn to represent romanization and use zh-Bpmf to represent Bopomofo phonetic representation system, when reading of a place name need to be denoted. zh-Latn-pinyin, zh-Latn-wadegile, and zh-Latn-tongyong can be used to represent Pinyin Romanization, Wade Giles Romanization, and Tongyong Pinyin respectively, according to IETF subtag registry.
- Han script name written in other languages please be represented in the way of name:[ISO 639-2]-Hani instead, like name:ja-Hani for Japanese name of a feature when written in Kanji.
- This way of language tagging can also applies to other name tags like alt_name=*, official_name=*, old_name=*, and such.
Rationale
There are many different ways of tagging Chinese names so it seems like a standarized proposal is useful.

Rendering
Relevant fallback mechanism is necessary for renderer that wish to display Chinese names.
Renderer should also pick correct type of Chinese font when displaying Chinese name, because the same unicode code point represent different glyph in different region and using same font for all CJK strings will not cut it.
Features/Pages affected
All features in OSM are affected. Mainly affect wikiprojects in Greater China area.
