Proposal
Significant fossils may be part of natural features or of man made constructions. These attract considerable attention - they can be the topic of walks or even books. Especially as "urban fossils" they are attracting attention.
Just like trees, they can be significant enough to map. Only objects in a fixed location should be mapped.
Rationale
Fossils are natural by definition. Though they can be part of artefacts, in essence, they remain natural objects in themselves.
Tagging
Relevant tags are mostly a matter of context
Key | value | description |
---|---|---|
taxon=* | free text in Latin | Latin name of the species, to the level of detail available to the mapper |
location=* | artefact, building, pavement, fixed_rock | Classification of the location this fossil can be found. Artefact means that the fossil has been extracted from any surrounding rock, but still in a fixed location. "Building" that is an integral part of some construction material of the building. "Pavement": it is part of the road or floor. "Fixed_rock" it is still part of fixed rocks. |
indoor=* | yes, no | A fossil location is assumed to be outdoors. Add indoor=yes to clarify that it is indoor. |
access=* | yes, no, customers | Whether the location from where you can see the fossil is publicly accessible. Use "customers" to indicate it is part of some POI which needs to be open in order te be able to visit. |
fossil:location=* | free text | Describe where exactly the fossil can be found. |
description=* | free text | General description of the fossil and its context. |
Examples
There's a book full of examples here [1]. Here's a crowdsourced map collecting urban fossils[2].
