Key name: interpolation
This tag should be applied to segments that lie between two nodes that were taken from a GPS track, but where the signal has been lost between the two nodes.
Not creating the segment at all might be another option, but I don't think it's necessarily a good thing to break ways like this, simply because of a (possibly short) GPS signal loss.
Segments tagged this way could be rendered in a special color in editors (but not in viewers), so that people who have a better track for that part of the way can easily spot and correct the problem.
Some alternative names for the key could be considered, since the meaning of "interpolation" might not be clear to everybody:
- please_revisit
- revisit
- inaccuracy
- quality=0,..,9 (a judgement of quality)
- satellites=0,..,12 (number of satellites in fix)
Also, besides yes and no, the tag could also have values that describe the kind and source of inaccuracy more specifically, like no_signal, tunnel (but there's already a tunnel tag), bad_fix (GPS position roaming around weirdly), jumpy_fix (GPS position suddently jumping a few meters), roadworks (the tracked course is not the normal course of the road), modified (the curse of the road has been moved since the track was taken), etc.
Please comment on these possibilities.
- Couldn't this be added to Proposed features/Source as source=interpolation? The alternative values like bad_fix are properties of the tracklogs; Grouping and tagging of GPX points would be better and more logical, although this feature is non-existent at this time. - Sounds good to me. I'd still prefer source=interpolation over source=guess personally, but then again perhaps the latter is easier to understand... On the other hand, something saying that the tracing was done under roadworks (that made the road shape different than usual), or conversely that the road shape has been modified since the last tracing (although the new data are not yet available) might still be useful as separate tags. - I'd also prefer source=interpolation as it is more focused on the end result - the map points - rather than one person's GPS data gathering. It also has more general use. For me, a lot of Sydney streets are very straight so it is reasonable to interpolate between two portions generated from separate and non-joining GPS tracks. But I'd still like to mark interpolated portion so that it can be checked later. Ewmjc 02:48, 19 September 2006 (BST)
