Proposal

A natural spring of flammable gas. The flame could be self-sustained or easily lightable. To be categorized as a fiery fountain the source must come naturally from the ground (no pipes or similar to transport the gas),

Rationale

There is currently no tag to represent this natural element.

Tagging

Applies to node only:

  • natural=fiery_fountain

Examples

An example of a self-sustained fiery fountain

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. --Jrachi (talk) 08:46, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. I changed my vote to oppose. natural=eternal_flame would be much better as that is the existing English term as other pointed out below. I do think this phenomena should have a tag. Also, it would be good if the proposal solved how to tag those man_made eternal flames --Supsup (talk) 23:31, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. Since it's a missing feature it's reasonable to add it --Gabrielesani (talk) 09:54, 14 October 2024 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. This term does not exist in English, and it's clearly silly to "vote" on something like this that only has two examples mapped. See https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/voting-feature-proposal-natural-fiery-fountain/120147/2 . "It makes no sense to vote" was also the feedback you got from https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/rfc-feature-proposal-tag-natural-fiery-fountain/110703 . • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. There is an existing English word for a naturally occurring eternal flame, and going by various entries the flame is allowed to extinguish by itself from time to time, then be re-ignited by for example lightning : Eternal flame - Wikipedia - There are also man-made eternal flames, e.g. on various Unknown Soldier’s resting places, hence makes sense to include the Natural / Naturally_Occurring part. -- H4N5-antw {talk} 21:30, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. As others said "fiery fountain" is a phantasy term and did not get much support in the forum discussion about this issue. Map HeRo (talk)
  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. I don't know if there are better English words for this kind of objects ('eternal flames' can also be operated by humans), and I fear there will be not so many OSM elements with this tag, but I think this proposal makes sense for those who need to map those specific naturally occurring events --Marcor (talk) 17:43, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal.... but agree that it should be tagged! The proper term seems to be "eternal flame" and I think it should be used here. That "eternal flames" can also be man made is no problem in my opinion as it is a tag for the key natural=* which implies obviously that it's not man made. One could use man_made=eternal_flame (2 uses at the moment) and natural=eternal_flame for the different items. --Segubi (talk)
