Proposal

Watering place at a ford

Define a tag for places where animals can drink. This tag is analogous to amenity=drinking_water, but considering the needs of animals rather than humans.

Define a tag extension watering_place=yes for the existing tags drinking_water and fountain to indicate that they are a suitable source of water for animals.

Basically there is two categories of places this tag applies to:

Bodies of water

Trough for animals and humans
  • Water quality suitable for animals. This usually means all waterways with flowing water that are not obviously polluted. It does not indicate a guaranteed water quality.
  • Water is accessible for animals. E.g. Low banks, no steep incline or obstacles or a shallow area where animals may wade in to drink.

Artificial water supplies

  • fountains that also allow access to animals
  • rain barrels and similar reservoirs
  • dedicated watering places like troughs, often found in the countryside for farm use or as decorations

Rationale

When you are travelling longer distances with animals, you need to find water supplies during the day. Especially horses require considerable amounts of water that cannot be carried along, but dogs will also have to drink. Mapping suitable locations will enable us to create specialized maps for trail riding or hiking with dogs or pack horses. The information about water supplies is highly useful when planning a travel route, especially in arid and mountaineous areas where water is not frequently available.

So far there is no suitable tag for this

  • amenity=drinking_water marks water supplies designed for humans. Drinking fountains are usually not directly usable by animals.
  • amenity=fountain may also be a watering place, but in many cases access for animals is either physically blocked or prohibited, or the fountain is decorative with chlorinated water.

"Watering place" is intended for animals only, currently these places would remain untagged. Water supplies for humans take precedence over them. If a fountain or supply of human potable water should also be suitable for animals, it should not be tagged as amenity=watering_place, but rather extended with the tag watering_place=yes.

Tagging

Distinct Watering Places

For distinct watering places like at a river bank, stream, lake, rain barrel or ford.

amenity=watering_place
as Extension

As extension for human potable water supplies with another primary tag like fountains

amenity=fountain
+ watering_place=yes

Example: A fountain/trough with potable water that is tagged as drinking_water today would become

amenity=drinking_water
+ watering_place=yes

Applies to

node Node

Rendering

No rendering on street maps.

On special interest maps e.g. for trail riding, a water bucket.

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. It is usefull for animal owners and does not hinder the others as it is not mapped normally --JND 18:38, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. It is usefull to differentiate and makes better quality map data (otherwise anything would be amenity=drinking_water --Extremecarver 22:52, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. I prefere the reuse of amenity=drinking_water with animals=yes --Zottel 11:23, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
As discussed, this would also mean that all places only suitable for animals, but not for humans would become amenity=drinking_water with humans=no and would be rendered as viable sources of potable water on existing maps. The proposed tag on the other hand does not disturb existing maps. Please reconsider. --Nop 13:03, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. I recommend the use of amenity=drinking_water (and additional tag for animals) for places, where humans can drink, but to avoid confusion this special animal feature sounds helpful to me. I don't understand why the use of this feature is reduced to nodes, as the ford-picture shows also linear usage possibilities. -- Dieterdreist 12:21, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
Actually, the map feature page defines highway=ford only for nodes, not for ways. I was suprised about this, too. --Nop 13:03, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. I am finaly decided, in the first place, I would have prefered, like suggested, to add a new tag to amenity=drinking_water, but the problem would be to break existing compatibility by adding places that are not suitable for humans. A problem I see however, is that people might be tempted to tag amenity=watering_place because drinking here is "unsure" for a human, while in some case I'd like to have the information that it might be possible and on my own responsability. • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. I think, it makes sence to make different amenities for humans and animals. --go2sh 13:05, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. If a watering place is not suitable for human, than animals shouldn't be given the same water. The only reason to discriminate human and animals is if human was prohibited by law (or regulation), while animals not. I would tag it as amenity=drinking_water with animal=yes or leave it off the map. A watering place is really just a place to get drinking water, just as amenity=drinking_water, though maybe not recommended for human consumption. --Skippern 20:35, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
