Proposal talk:Citadel

Start from start
Neither historic=castle nor castle_type=* are approved as of now. Would it make sense to start from there?
- Propose (and hopefully approve) historic=castle.
- Propose (and hopefully approve) castle_type=*, includind castle_type=citadel.

- I see where you're coming from, but approving castle_type=* would mean approving all of its currently documented values, and I still see major issues with it and with current tagging practices. My main issues with castle_type=* are:
- castle_type=fortress would be better as a main historic=* tag
- castle_type=stately does not always fit common descriptions of a castle
- castle_type=defensive is quite generic and non-descriptive
- castle_type=castrum is mostly ruins and archaeological sites
- castle_type=manor is poorly differentiated from historic=manor
- castle_type=hillfort can usually be tagged as other things, depending on its original function and current state
- ...and I can probably come up with more concerns.
- I would have to sort this out first before I would even consider bringing castle_type=* to a vote, and that's a boatload of work.

- Yeah, tidying up castle_type=* might be quite a chunk of work. However, approving a tag (key+value) before approving the key itself appears odd to me. --Martianfreeloader (talk) 21:39, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- I agree with you that proposing a tag in an unapproved key with many issues without working on the rest of the key (for now) is an odd choice, but it might be useful for when/if castle_type=* ever gets restructured. That could be a future project, but I won't make any promises.
- Also, historic=castle is a de facto tag, I wouldn't bother to make a stand-alone proposal for it. Approving it could be part of restructuring efforts for castle_type=*, though.
- The bottom line is that while tagging for other types of castles is currently a bit odd, tags for citadels are still missing entirely and that is what I am addressing right now. --501ghost (talk) 22:08, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
