Is there any reason a mapper shouldn’t tag both cycleway:left=* and cycleway:right=* instead of just cycleway:both=*? Is there a reason why a mapper should be able to tag both cycleway:both=* and cycleway:right=* intentionally? – Minh Nguyễn 💬 05:18, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- Personally, I would prefer if we where to migrate towards explit left/right tags and consider the "both" a shorthand that should be updated. However, I don't see any chance to get a consensus on this at this point. However, I encorage someone to feel the water on this to see if it would be possible to make this a successfull proposal.--Tordans (talk) 10:54, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- No, both and left/right together should never happen (same as cycleway=* + cycleway:*=*). I understand the status quo that we accept this and rely on validation tooling to fix those cases. Since iD does not recognise cycleway:both I would expect quite a few places where this happens. --Tordans (talk) 10:54, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
Use of a more specific : suffix is normally used to indicate strong confidence
We disagree with this proposal and if it comes to a vote will be voting against it. The key issue is that the use of a colon-suffix in OSM tagging is historically used to indicate a high level of confidence against something that is vague. cycleway:both=* in our view is a synonym for cycleway=* but with a strong implication that the mapper has surveyed it and is explicitly removing any ambiguity as to whether it really applies to both sides. This proposal would lose that ability to state strong confidence, and just adds complexity where none is needed. Furthermore, exactly the same arguments could equally applied to all kinds of other tags, e.g. maxspeed, which again would just mean more noise in the data. We see no real problem with the existing tag; accordingly we feel this proposal should not go forward. --Cyclestreets (talk) 13:21, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
