I approve the proposal. Maybe we could add the sub-tag veterinary=yes for pet shops where veterinary visits can be arranged as an additional service (the site is still not expected to be a proper veterinary clinic, nor permanently attended by a veterinary, like we would expect from amenity=veterinary) Kaitu 17:34, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Rethinking amenity=pet instead of this tag

A kennel or other animal boarding service is not necessarily also a pet shop, and there are certainly pet grooming businesses that don't sell pets.

I think this group of services would best be served by amenity=pet or amenity=animal for a single map representation with the following sub-tags (replace pet with animal for the amenity=animal case) for possible subtle variations on that icon (e.g. an opposed horse and dog silhouette, one above the other, in a blue field, as the main icon; a fence across the horse or house over the dog for their respective boarding services):

pet:shop=yes/aquatic/freshwater/saltwater/mammals/reptiles/amphibians/birds/... (this being the focus of the shop, not necessarily exclusive)

pet:shelter=yes/no_kill/... (aka "dog pound") [1]

pet:boarding=yes/dogs/cats/horses/user defined (other)

pet:training=yes/dogs/horses

pet:grooming=yes/dogs/horses

pet:veterinary=yes (it doesn't look like amenity=veterinary is much used, but perhaps this could be used to indicate regular-care vets as opposed to emergency care "pet hospitals")

Obviously this is a complete rework of this idea, the motive being that most of these things do not currently have a representation at all, and it's better to start general than specific, but provide a means to refine. I'd like to get some feedback before formally making the new proposal. Among other things, is grouping horses in like this a good idea or does it not really fit? My pets (fish) don't go to the vet, so someone with more experience is welcome to suggest more sane tags. :) --Pouletic 14:28, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

I strongly agree with Pouletic - in the UK at least, boarding kennels and catteries are common and widely used but they usually do not sell anything but their boarding service. There is nothing wrong with shop=pet as such but the new proposal is much more efficient i.e. amenity=pet plus pet=shop / shelter / boarding / training / grooming - this would cover most of what I encounter in my travels in the UK. Pet. pharmacy feature

I think we need some tags to mark objects (vet. clinics and shops) that sell vet. meds. Most shops do not sell meds, and that's important to find shops that do quick. Probably, they could be rendered with an other icon on the map.

Or even use another tag like amenity=vet_pharmacy to render that on the map as a different point, because it is quite important. --Aleksandr Pa (talk) 22:02, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
