Manmade

Would it not be more logical to use manmade=pumping_station? 'waterway' seems to be mostly for features that are navigatable such as rivers, canals etc. You most certainly don't want to navigate through a pumping station!. Furthermore, they are often significant engineering structures deserving the manmade tag. There are already similar approved 'manmade' features dealing with water, most notable manmade=watermill. Some time ago I have mapped a few pumping stations in the Netherlands with manmade=pump_house (a small google search suggested that as a suitable term but I agree that 'pumping_station' is a better tag). Polderrunner 19:00, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

I agree with Polderrunner. man_made=pumping_station would be a better tag name. Wagner51 18:36, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Same, according to tagwatch there are now 31 uses of man_made=pumping_station and 11 uses of waterway=pumping_station. Rene_A 08:30, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

I agree, too. In our village there is a pumping station that pumps rain water over a dyke. It has nothing to do with a waterway. --Schuetzm 17:49, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Tag key should certainly be "man_made" and not "waterway". Definition should be expanded to include not only water drainage pumping stations but also sewage pumping stations and drinking water supply pumping stations (e.g. along a long-distance water supply pipe or aqueduct as from - e.g. Welsh Mountains to Liverpool, Cumbrian Lake District to Manchester. Sewage pumping station

Would you consider this tag to also cover sewage pumping stations which aim to ensure proper flow of sewage through public works? I've also just used the man_made|pumping_station combination (see node). --Ceyockey 23:26, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

I suggest to use man_made=pumping_station and to add type=waste_water since there is no "standardised" expression for a sewage/wastewater pumping station. --Sn0wcrash 2011-02-06T13:19Z
Not type=wastewater, to be consistent with man_made=wastewater_plant? How about type=sewage to correspond to the value in landuse=reservoir? Or, better still, type=sewer to correspond to man_made=pipelineMichael Z. 2011-04-17 17:33 z

refining

I'm currently tagging the water network near my town (Cognac, France) and i wonder how to tag all features. The proposed pumping station is good but mess some precisions for the fluid transport (water, waste_water...)

I also watch (OSMDoc) usage and it seems that raw water pumping delivered to the water_works was also tagged man_made=water well (with additionnal pumping=mecanical). It troubles me, not sure pumping_station is really useful...

I propose to man_made=pumping_station (no waterway, pumping station are not on the water way, sometime on the riverbank but often on land).

I also propose sub-tag :

  • pumping_station or utility=water|wastewater]drain
  • pump=mecanical|manual
  • operator=* (the operator)
  • ref=* (when it has a ref)
  • building=yes (when the pump is enclosed by a building)
  • drinkable=yes (if the water pump is drinkable)
  • access= yes|no|private

-- User:Padorange 28 th june 2010

I would replace utility=rainwater with utility=drainage. A lot of excess water is caused by seepage, not just by rainfall. I also would replace utility=water with utility=drinking_water to make it more clear. --Cartinus 14:24, 29 August 2010 (BST)
understand, but water has a very wide usage in OSM ; rainwater could be more precise using drain that's OK. After some search drain has allready usage in OSM and i update Proposed_features/water_network (an effort to resume water networks) Padorange 20:57, 29 August 2010 (BST)

I would suggest the term potable water instead of drinkable water. In addition we have wastewater and recycled water (processed wastewater, good for irrigation and industrial cooling but not for human consumption).

Change Tagging expression.

I would like to change the current tagging from waterway=pumping_station to man_made=pumping_station

Some of you already expressed their opinions and the majority favors man_made=pumping_station

--Sn0wcrash 2011-02-06T13:28Z

That sounds perfectly just, it is in the line of discussion and real tagging. Don´t hesitate, I can mail a hint in the tagging maillist. /Johan Jönsson 16:49, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Drainage

Concerning the types, I've missed and added "drainage", as wastewater normally is water released by households and industries, while most of the water in draining canals is rainwater.--Ulamm (talk) 14:43, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
