Non-humanitarian soup kitchens

Some soup kitchens are run not for humanitarian reasons, like the tag description suggests. They are run for political reasons and/ or just because people like to cook and eat in this manner. However, they serve food below market price or for free with possibility to donate. An example are theses soup kitchens in Berlin/ Germany. I think these types of soup kitchens should be mentioned in the tag description. --Cantho (talk) 03:59, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Overlapps?

How common are overlapps of Food Banks and Food Kitchens? Because then it might become complticated.

Is there some good umbrella term?

And then use an additional 2nd tag like:

food_???:meal=yes

food_???:food=yes

I came here to discuss this (I've been tagging these types of amenity). There does seem to be a sizable overlap of soup kitchens and food pantries. My thought was to do something like this: since social_facility=food_bank encompasses both food pantry and soup kitchen, there should be subtags that would be something like food_bank:soup_kitchen=yes, food_bank:food_pantry=yes, or perhaps food_bank=soup_kitchen, =food_pantry, or =both, but that seems a little crude. Also, I don't know how prevalent "food pantry" is as a term outside of the US (or regions thereof). --Pkoby (talk) 16:21, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

These concerns about overlaps are certainly valid, and there are many facilities that provide both packaged food and hot meals. My feeling is that in the US these should probably continue to be marked as social_facility=food_bank. However, I see at least three reasons to keep the social_facility=soup_kitchen tag as proposed:

1) The problem with overlaps is not unique to soup kitchens. There are plenty of cases where multiple values for the social_facility tag could be applied to the same facility. For example, a homeless shelter could also provide hot meals or counseling. The same challenge exists with broader tags such as amenity.

2) For larger facilities that offer meals to the public (more popular outside the US), this tag will be very useful. For example, the government subsidized "popular restaurants" in Brazil feed hot meals to thousands of people a day and would not fit well under a food_bank subtag.

3) Although the proposal is not perfect, the approval votes indicate that it is at least intuitive. SterlingGIS (talk) 17:01, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
