Proposal talk:Timeline tags

I would be interested in this. Many roads in my neighbourhood were closed when the motorway was built in 1973. So far, I have only added some disused road sections that are still good for bicycles. I haven't added any roads that no longer exist. Before I acquired a GPS unit and joined the OpenStreetMap effort, I noticed that someone had coined the term OpenPastMap.--Skela 07:18, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Not in the same database, please

These tags are fine and a really good idea, but they can not go to the same database. There are several places of great historical interest, where buildings have been placed one on another several times in the past (Bethlehem, Rome, ...) Nobody will be able to find anything in the edit mode, if all these nodes and ways cross each other. Please create OpenPastMap as second database and merge the data with current OSM for display reasons. Historical data will badly confuse new users and will be even unreadable for power users in cases where the place name has changed language over the years. Again, this is a great idea, but it can't go to the same database. --Lulu-Ann 10:06, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

I must admit that, for the first time, I agree with Lulu-Ann. This database maps what is on the ground today and what is Verifiability. Editing in some old places like most all city centres in Europe would be soon a nightmare if we see the buildings from today, some buildings from the past, roman roads which are sometimes overlapping with modern roads, etc. But nice idea for a separate db -- Pieren 11:36, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
