A tag for a stationary, permanent crane. Not the types used on construction sites that are gone after a few weeks/months. This is intended for cranes such as those at docks, or large storage/manufacturing areas.

- I like it, but I would like to see some sort of tagging to indicate the intended usage, and whether or not it is available for hire by the public (of course, the access=* tag might be appropriate here). For example, this boat launch crane over here may be publicly available, but that one over there might only be for private use. --Cohort 04:47, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
- i hadn't really intended it for that sort of thing, more for huge dock cranes, but good idea. will add to the proposal Myfanwy 06:23, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me. There are many man made features in the landscape, as they are often very distinctive and therefore good for recognition and navigation, I think it good to extend the man_made= tag values a lot more than they are now. MikeCollinson 10:05, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
- Sounds okay to me. However, I'm not a huge fan of the
man_made
key (seems a bit generic and catch-all, not to mention slightly sexist). Theindustrial
key might be a good candidate instead. Frankie Roberto 13:10, 28 December 2007 (UTC)- i agree entirely, on both counts. to be honest, the top-level tags (man_made, waterway, aeroway, highway, natural,...,etc) need a huge amount of work done. they're horribly inconsistent, ambiguous, vague and don't sit well together - it makes me feel very uncomfortable using them. but the beauty of the tagging scheme makes it very easy to change everything later. i think for now it's best to get as many tags as possible sorted out, and then look at the landscape later as OSM matures, and see how they should be better broken down. a project for 2009 i think.
