Proposal
Create value for tag shop to identify a business offering space for rent to store vehicles or goods like furniture for a longer period.Items stored include:
- Caravans, motorhomes and cars
- Boats
- Self-storage: furniture
Rationale
Owners of campers, caravans and boats often store their vehicles for a longer period (a number of months or a year) while they don't use their vehicle. It is important to know reliable places that provide such service. People who vacate their home because they live abroad for an extended period of time store their furniture etc. in a commercial storage facility.
In the case of vehicles the storage differs from for example long term airport parking:
- Storing and retrieving is often by appointment only (often a few days in advance) and at limited periods during the week;
- Focus of the business is on best capacity use, not on easy access: you may not be allowed to park your vehicle yourself and it may be needed to move 5 vehicles before yours can be reached;
- Often additional services are provided: disconnecting and connecting batteries, monthly starting, small service jobs.
Examples
- Boat and caravan owners using their vehicles in summer only and storing it in winter;
- Overland travellers who return home for some time;
- People living in Europe and leaving their car in Africa to spend their holidays there;
- People letting their home while they live abroad with a need to store their own furniture.
Providers of storage services can for example be campings, farmers or dedicated storage companies.
Tagging
- The existing tag shop=* gets new key storage_rental;
- The new attribute "storage_rental" indicates what can be stored. Proposed values: "boats", "cars", "caravans". More values can be proposed later;
- The existing attribute covered=* indicates if the storage is covered;
- The existing attribute access=* indicates if the facility is available for a limited group of people only;
- Shop or amenity
- It has been questioned whether the new value should be a value of shop=* or a value of amenity=*; if a grouping key "Business" would exist it probably would be the best option, but defining a new category is far beyond the scope of this proposal. If the storage location were an amenity expected at a larger facility like a toilet in a shopping center amenity=* would have been the best choice. However, the storage facility sells rental space and is usually a standalone commercial operation or at least well separated from other activities of the provider (farming, camping), therefore shop=* is the best available category;

- I oppose this proposal. Shop is not fitting as key, even overloaded amenity key would be better. For me shop=storage is rather place where I may buy boxes, cases, packages, bubble wrap etc Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 18:56, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
- shop=shipping would seem to do for bubble wrap. Brycenesbitt (talk) 08:11, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

- I oppose this proposal. The shop tag is generally (albeit not always) used for somewhere where you buy something. You don't buy storage space you only rent it. An analogy would be shop=bicycle where you can buy a bike and amenity=bicycle_rental where you can rent one. Peter Mead (talk) 10:19, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

- I oppose this proposal. The same as in the first voting: I think shop is not the right key. --Foxxi59 (talk) 17:27, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- I have comments but abstain from voting on this proposal. Shop key is not fitting, but at least value is better Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:26, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- I approve this proposal. Frankly neither shop nor amenity really fits, but so what? What's important is consistency. It would help if household goods storage were more prominently featured in the writeup, especially in the description tag above that gets imported in the iD editor. For USA use you'll want a keyword alias of self-storage. See new "see also" section added above. Brycenesbitt (talk) 06:55, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
- I oppose this proposal. This suggested tag a) does not belong in the shop key; b) is too general (mixing boat, car & household effects just makes for compilated data consumption) and c) (and most importantly) duplicates pre-existing tags which have been in use for several years. Effort would be better directed at documentation and editor support for the existing tags (amenity=boat_storage, amenity=storage and amenity=self_storage. SK53 (talk) 10:18, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
- amenity=self_storage has four uses, hardly a trend. One should also account for a business that offers both goods and vehicle storage, as that probably exists. Brycenesbitt (talk) 17:46, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
- I approve this proposal. Thoughts of "shop is not the right key" should define a better key, the fact is that this is the best key OSM has for this activity. And the voters should have discussed this while the proposal is in the comment stage. Warin61 (talk) 21:20, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
- I approve this proposal. Mayorgatellez (talk) 23:32, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
Voting result
The voting round for shop=storage resulted in 3 yes and 3 no votes. The voting round for shop=storage_rental resulted in 3 yes votes, 2 no votes and 1 abstain. By consequence the proposal has been rejected due to insufficient votes.
Arguments against the last proposal were:
- The tag should be amenity=storage_rental, not shop=storage_rental;
- The proposal includes boat storage. Boat storage is already covered in the documented tag amenity=boat_storage (used 2.430 times by April 2015).
No amended proposal was created for the following reasons:
- The interest in the proposal is low: in both voting rounds only 6 votes in total
- Changing to the alternative amenity=storage_rental would get the support of those who prefer amenity=*, but lose the support of the proponents of shop=*, leading to a similar voting result;
- Changing the proposal to shop=car_storage or amenity=car_storage would solve the conflict with amenity=boat_storage, but make it more difficult to map storage of trailers, RV's and motorcycles, often at the same location where cars are stored.
