Local Community

It is important to map these so that any policy advocacy can be pushed further to improve the state of public infrastructure in Puducherry and make Puducherry a better and safe place to live.

How To Map Street Lights?

In Puducherry it is becoming a very common practice to utilize existing electricity poles to mount street lamp on it as well. In some places we may have dedicated pole only for street lamp and in other places street lights will be mounted on electricity pole.

Note: It is recommended to go out in the evening after the street light has been turned on, so that the operational status can be clearly determined.

1. Install Every Door app in your smartphone. Apps like Organic Maps (or) OsmAnd is not recommended for this activity because the live data is not loaded (unless you enabled Live Updates in OsmAnd) and one may end up mapping already existing street lamp since the copy of the data is outdated in one's device. Hence, it is recommended to use Every Door.
2. Enable GPS and walk over the street, stand below the street light and get GPS fix and add the street light in the map.
3. If street light is standalone with it's own pole then use street light tag (highway=street_lamp)
4. If you come across a tall tower light, then use Lighting Mast tag (man_made=mast and tower:type=lighting)
5. If street light is mounted on electricity pole then use utility pole tag with the following tags
   • man_made=utility_pole
   • utilities=power;street_lighting
   • highway=street_lamp
6. Add additional details regarding the lamp type, color of light, and operational status. If you are unsure about the values, it is good to ignore the tag than to add incorrect or assumed value.
   • lamp_type=LED (or) sodium - Puducherry Smart City Development Agency is on a mission to replace every Sodium vapor lamp with LED lights. If you see a white colour light, it is 99% LED, if you see Yellow old type of light it is most likely Sodium vapor lamp. Hence use one the value, but not both.
   • light:colour=white (or) yellow
   • operational_status=operational (or) broken (or) needs_maintenance - If the light is working as expected and in good condition then use operational; if it is not working, then use broken; if it is working but needs some maintenance use needs_maintenance value.
   • check_date=yyyy-mm-dd - This indicates when was the presence / operational status of the street light was last checked. It reflects the freshness and correctness of the data. Hence, enter the date of your survey in YYYY-MM-DD format.
