Recommended process for JOSM users

  • Extract all the `residential`,`tertiary`, and `unclassified` highways in a county that have no surface tags with the following overpass turbo query where you substitute the target county in for "Winona"
[out:xml]/*fixed by auto repair*/[timeout:25];
 {{geocodeArea:Winona County, Minnesota}}->.searchArea;
 rel(area.searchArea)[admin_level=8];
 map_to_area -> .all_level_8_areas;
 (
    way["highway"="residential"][!surface](area.searchArea);
    way["highway"="unclassified"][!surface](area.searchArea);
    way["highway"="tertiary"][!surface](area.searchArea);
 )->.a;
 way.a(area.all_level_8_areas)->.b;
 ( .a;- .b;);
 (._;>;); out meta;
  • Run the query by clicking the "Run" button
  • Export the results to JOSM by clicking on the "Export" button in Overpass Turbo (remember to have JOSM running)
  • In your JOSM window you will have all the ways loaded. You can start editing here, OR your can:
  • Install the "todo" plugin
  • Select all your ways
  • Add them to the "todo" list
  • Sequentially fix all the ways in the county. Don't worry if you don't finish the whole thing. If you need to quit, you can just restart the whole process again!
