State Of The Map 2010/Program

Your suggestions

The SotM10 Organizing committee put out a call for suggestions here. They were interested to know what you are most interested in hearing. Is it about tagging (eg. cycleways), is it about hacking (eg. API), is it about a certain subjects (eg disaster relief), or do you like to have more workshops (about what?), or .... ?

• Options for more automated gathering of track log data by non-mapper users carrying smartphones or other suitable devices - opportunities for mapping uncharted territory, gathering traffic stats and providing live traffic information. --Mackerski 13:07, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
• I think we need to "invite" TomH to give a technical talk. He claims he doesn't have much to say, but we all know that's not true :-) Last year the talks didn't swing in the direction of technical details much. --Harry Wood 14:50, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
• I really like the talks from people mapping in random countries around the world. We should keep this on the program, but they seem to go a different pace. I was thinking it might be better to splice them in-between other types of talks. Mix things up a bit. Sponsoring some people to attend was good too.     • I like the idea of putting them between talks as they are nice short bits. What about no speaker and a slide limit(maybe with timings), then the SOTM presenter could run them while the next speaker gets set up. The poster thing is cool too though (at SOTM08 discussion started between people staring at the ITO World posters). Both these ideas could include people who couldn't make it (e.g. Visa problems). - LastGrape/Gregory 02:35, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
  • I would like to see a scholarship program again. I'd love to attend SotM '10! :) The poster idea is nice because we can leave it there all the time and schedule one or more then one time to talk about it. --Nighto 22:09, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
• I would like to see one of the blind Users makeshinder and arimo64 invited to tell us how they are mapping in India and Finland. (See their tracks at blindOSM.) Lulu-Ann
  • If you can bring your tactile map again I would love to see/feel it and chat in a break (I sadly missed SOTM09). I might do a related project in Computer Science next year (will know more come SOTM). - LastGrape/Gregory 02:35, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
• I would like to see user Astrid or someone from the team wheelchair routing invited to tell us how to map and route for and with wheelchair drivers. Lulu-Ann
• I would like to hear some admin explaining the "new" blocker/blocked user concept. Who is able to block some user, how many have been blocked in the last time, etc. -- Pieren 11:34, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
• I would like to hear the point of view of OSMF about the limits of what can be stored in the database. We say OSM is a geographic db but we see more and more hyperlinks, telephon numbers, opening hours or underground features or GPX of flights, extern applications storing chats in changeset comments. Can the OSMF explain the policy of what is permitted and what is not ? Or is it again "the OSMF does not decide" ?--Pieren 11:34, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

  • I think that's a workshop. Taking place in his hotel room. Registration is not limited by number but is restricted to certain authorisation.
• I am writing an abstract for a paper to submit entitled "Cartographic finessing: what I'd like to do with mapnik" -- steve8
• I have been mapping for only the past 6 months, so if possible it would be nice five minutes on something really basic which I may be able to understand and apply. I like the idea of using SmartPhones to aid mapping and I really can't get my head around JOSM so still using Potlatch. Are you planning any Beginner Workshops? AliOnHols
