A baby hatch (also, safe haven) is a place where mothers can bring their, usually newborn, babies and leave them anonymously in a safe place from where the will be taken and cared for.

The concept is to prevent mothers from killing their babies because they are unwanted or just because of depressions that often follow a pregnancy. (In earlier times one could drop babies in front of churches or monasteries, but this is not allowed any more). The child will be given up for adoption, unless the mother returns for the child; the latter happening without admonishment or punishment.

Opinions about the morality and effectiveness of the concept vary wildly; nevertheless, these facilities exist in many countries.

How to map

Create a node where hatch is located or draw an area along the building outline. Tag the node or area with amenity=baby_hatch. If babies are accepted at the front desk of another facility (e.g., a fire_station) use baby_hatch=yes.
