This tag is used to map certain features erected to protect hamlets, roads, pistes etc. from avalanches or to keep snow in place, so that there will not be avalanches. It is mostly used for so-called snow bridges (Stahlschneebrücken in German), that make a very prominent appearance in the landscape.
Types
For as long as this is a stub, please refer to Taginfo or Avalanche protection, what features may be tagged like that. Some examples below:
- avalanche_protection=snow_bridge comb-like structure in the starting zone
- avalanche_protection=dam wall or embankment perpendicular to flow in the runout zone
- avalanche_protection=berm wall or embankment at steep angle to flow in the track zone
- avalanche_protection=mound roundish wall or embankment in track zone
- avalanche_protection=shed a.k.a gallery, a roof over e.g. highways or railways in track or runout zone [tunnel=avalanche_protector is in use to tag the traffic infrastructure itself]
A different kind are installations that trigger avalanches while they remain small: avalanche_protection=gas_ignition (might get mapped as a point or a short overground pipeline for the outflow and perhaps a small building for the container of the explosives and another underground pipeline connecting them)
