Status: in usePage for proposal

The tag man_made=tunnel is used to tag a tunnel, defined by the outline of the tunnel. It is suitable to group together all ways running into the tunnel and for holding descriptive tags for that tunnel (the object represents the tunnel as a whole).

Current status

Although a proposal exists, it never went past the draft stage. Nonetheless, there is a constant increase use of this tag, and has gotten official iD support in May 2019[1] but as of Sep 2024 isn't universally supported either (e.g. JOSM lacks the corresponding rendering and templates).

How to tag

(Note that this description is based on man_made=bridge but is intentionally lacking details due to the aforementioned lack of official acceptance.)

Draw an outline of the tunnel as an area area and apply man_made=tunnel and layer=* to it. The outline should encompass the continuous structure of the tunnel.

Additional tags on the man_made=tunnel outline:

  • name=* – name of the tunnel
  • layer=* – to describe the vertical relationship with surrounding features

Ways in and on the tunnel:

  • Connect the road way ways running into the tunnel to the man_made=tunnel outline where the ways cross the outline. Mark these ways with tunnel=*.
  • Do not connect the way ways above the tunnel to the outline.
